What is Video Assistant Referee (VAR)?

In 2010, the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) was working on a project called “Refereeing 2.0.” This project was the start of Video Assistant Referee. KNVB went through several trials during the 2012/2013 season of the dutch league (Everdivise). 2 years later, they decided to present this technology to International Football Association Board (IFAB) and came to an agreement.Video Assistant Referee has been recently introduced to association football. VAR is a group of 3 people that requires teamwork in order to review certain decisions that are taken by the main referee. In this group of three, there is the video assistant referee himself, which is the former referee, his assistant and the replay administrator. The VAR is located in a video operation room inside the football stadium, and there are only monitors and different camera angles inside that room. There are two different ways to use VAR. One of them is that the VAR suggests a decision, and the other is that the main referee ask for the re-play after taking a decision. The main referee has three different choices; he can just stick with his decision, take the VAR’s advice, or reevaluate the scene again by looking at the replay on the side of the pitch. VAR can review 4 different types of decision. you will be able to look at them on the section below.
